Every fee season, owners ask me the same thing: "Can I just pay my maintenance fees with points?" Sometimes, yes. There are three different ways to do it, they use three different currencies, and all three pay back far less than your points cost you. Here's each one, with the math, and what to do instead.
The three ways, side by side
| Method | Who can use it | What you get | |---|---|---| | Vacation Points toward fees | Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Premier owners | Up to 1¢ (Silver, Gold), 2¢ (Platinum) or 5¢ (Diamond) per point | | Hilton Honors points toward fees | HGV Max members with an eligible Hilton Honors Amex | 500 Honors = $1 (0.2¢ per Honors point) | | Bluegreen Rewards toward fees | Owners who've earned Bluegreen Rewards through referrals | Depends on the rewards you've earned |
Compare those with what a Bluegreen point costs to carry: about 12–17¢ a year in Trust Fund E (see What Is a Bluegreen Point Worth?).
Paying with your Vacation Points
Bluegreen's HGV Max member benefits sheet lists Points Payment of Fees: "Use Vacation Points to pay Bluegreen Vacation Club dues or maintenance fees." These are your Bluegreen Vacation Points applied directly to the bill, with no Hilton Honors conversion involved. The rate depends on your Premier tier:
| Premier tier | Value per point toward fees | |---|---| | Foundation, Bronze | Not available | | Silver | Up to 1¢ | | Gold | Up to 1¢ | | Platinum | Up to 2¢ | | Diamond | Up to 5¢ |
The math. A Gold owner who puts 10,000 points toward fees takes $100 off the bill. Those 10,000 points cost about $1,200–$1,700 a year to carry. Even at Diamond's 5¢, 10,000 points takes $500 off, still well below what they cost.
That's the core problem: you're paying 12¢ or more for each point and redeeming it for 1–5¢. It only makes sense for points you'd otherwise lose.
Paying with Hilton Honors (HGV Max members)
On bluegreenowner.com, the My Maintenance Fees and Club Dues page has a Redeem Hilton Honors Points Toward Maintenance Fees offer.
The redemption form spells out the terms: 500 Hilton Honors points equal $1 toward your annual maintenance fee, in increments of 500. You must be the primary cardholder of an eligible Hilton Honors American Express card (Hilton Honors, Surpass, Aspire or Business), a U.S.-based member with a U.S.-based ownership billed in U.S. dollars, and current and in good standing. At 0.2¢ per Honors point, 100,000 Honors points takes just $200 off your bill, roughly half of what the same points are worth on a hotel night (about 0.35–0.4¢ each). If you're earning Honors through stays and a Hilton card, you'll almost always get more by using them for hotel nights. See Building Hilton Honors Points and Offsetting Fees. For the Honors redemption form screen by screen (500 Honors = $1 in increments of 500, primary cardholder of an eligible Hilton Honors Amex), see How to Use HGV Hub.
What if you convert Bluegreen points to Honors first? 1 Bluegreen point becomes 11.2 Honors points, and 11.2 ÷ 500 = about 2.2¢ per Bluegreen point toward fees, before the conversion fee ($194 unless you're Diamond Premier). On a 20,000-point conversion, that's $448 off your bill, or $254 after the fee. The full walkthrough is in How to Convert Bluegreen Points to Hilton Honors.
Paying with Bluegreen Rewards
The same fees page also offers "pay your Maintenance Fees with Bluegreen Rewards." Bluegreen Rewards is a separate rewards currency you earn by referring qualified guests to Bluegreen. (It's not the Hilton Honors credit card, which earns Hilton Honors points on your spending.) It isn't your Vacation Points, so using it doesn't cost you any vacation time. If you have a Bluegreen Rewards balance, putting it toward fees is a reasonable use. Check the redemption value on the page before you redeem.
What to do instead
If the goal is to get more out of your fees, these beat paying fees with points:
- Book a stay with the points. A resort stay usually returns the most value per point. Even a short 2- or 3-night stay counts.
- Save points you can't use this year. Bluegreen lets you save current-year points into the next year, so they keep their full value.
- Use HGV Hub's Enhanced Redemption. At 14¢ a point (up to 20% of a cruise or car rental), it's worth several times what fee payment is. See How to Use HGV Hub.
- Rent out a reservation, where your contract and Bluegreen's rules allow it, instead of turning points into pennies.
Paying fees with points is a salvage move: the right call only for points that will expire and can't be saved or booked. Everything else on this list is better.
